MY ITALY

By Ted Diamond

Pisa was one of the first cities he visited in Italy and one of his favorite Italian cities, but he was in love with Pisa before he saw it. When he was a boy, he read about the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, but when he read the word Pisa, he was thinking of pizza.

The tower got its name because it really does lean to one side. Some people want to try to fix it because they are afraid it may fall over.

The tower probably will not fall down. It is 600 years old. It is very human kind of leaning. Nothing is perfect, it seems to say.

Many Americans tell him that Italy has a lot of problems: the trains are never on time, the telephones do not always work and the streets are not always clean.

But that is what he likes about Italy. It is old and imperfect and very human.
