Biografia del Grup

Per allà a la dècada dels 90, després de la era post-Nirvana, diverses bandes post-grunge que recuperaven sons punk setantencs i proto-punks seixantencs, i amollats a pautes comercials, van aparèixer dues bandes que, seguin els passos de grups bons, com podien ser Ramones, The Clash o Husker Du, van arribar a l'èxit: The Offspring i Green Day.

La història de Green Day comença el 1983, a Berkeley, Califòrnia, quan dos amics anomenats Billy Joe Armstrong amb la guitarra; i la veu i Michael Pritchard (Mike Dirnt) amb el baix, formen el seu primer grup de música, anomenat The Sweet Children. Llavors tenien 14 anys.

Per la seva part, un nen fincat a Berkeley, anomenat Frank Edwin Wright III, més conegut com a Tre Cool, tocava en un grup punk-pop The LookOuts, un combo amb el que Billy arriba a col·laborar.

Mentrestant, el 1989, es va unir al grup el bateria John Kiffmeyer, qui es feia dir artísticament Al Sobrante i The Sweet Children decideixen canviar de nom, dues setmanes abans de treure el seu primer CD a la venta “1039/ Smoothed Our Slappy Hours”, per dir-se tal i com se'ls coneix actualment: Green Day.

Biografia del grup

Poc després, Sobrante va deixar el grup per dedicar-se als seus estudis universitaris i en les baquetes s'hi va col·locar Tre Cool. Aquest es va estrenar en el grup amb el disc “Kerplunk” (1991), on hi ha una col·lecció de talls enganxosos i punk-pop melòdic, com “2000 light years away”, “One for the razorbacks”, “Android”, “Privat Ale” o “Welcome to Paradise”. En aquest disc també va tocar alguna cançó Al Sobrante, quan ja havia deixat el grup.

Aquests CD's van anar acreixentant la seva popularitat, fet seguit d'aprop per les grans discogràfiques, que van començar a ofertar al trio. Al final seria la Warner qui firmaria amb Green Day, publicant amb Reprise el seu disc de major èxit “Dookie” (1994).

Amb temes escrit per Billy Joe, com “Longview”, “Basket Case”, “When I Come Around” i produït per Rob Cavallo (Warner Reprise), es va convertir amb tot un fenomen mundial i va llençar una filera de bandes punk-pop amb sons similars al ofertat per el conjunt de Califòrnia.

El disc, un dels millors i més venuts de la seva discografia, es va complementar amb interpretacions en viu en el Lollapalooza i en el festival comercial de Woodstock, on els van escollir com un dels grups més populars a nivell internacional.

El seu triomf comercial es repetiria amb “Insomniac” (1995) amb els singles “Brain Stew”, “Geek Stink Breath” o “Walking Contradiction”, i amb “Nimrod” (1997), disc amb temes com “Hitchin' a ride” o l'acústica “Good Ridance”, en el qual intentava expandir el seu so i no estancar-se sols en el punk-pop, experimentant amb noves músiques amb bastant encert.

Ambdós treballs van ser coproduïts de nou per Cavallo, qui també col·laboraria a “Warning” (2000).

Biografia del grup

L'any 2001 va aparèixer un recopilatori “International Superhits” (2001) (on juntament van publicar “International Supervideos” (2001) amb els videoclips recopilatoris) i un any més tard, van publicar “Shenanigans”

(2002), amb la publicació de cares b i de temes apareguts en recopilacions, entre elles la versió dels Kinks “Tired of waiting for you”, i la de Ramones “Outsider”.

Un cop abandonada l'edat de centrar-se en la seva atenció amb trivialitats acneiques, els Green Day reapareixen amb “American Idiot” (2004), disc conceptual ideat com a òpera rock o com ambiciós projecte líric i sonor. Per el seu desplegament adopta un to llastimós i queixós , crític, amb una aura de desil·lusió en un ambient netament urbà en base a comentaris sociopolítics i vinyetes dominades per el sentir d'un jove americà, qui busca sortida a la seva desorientació vital amb un transfons estilístic power-pop i punk-pop.

Billy Joe va néixer a Rodeo, Califòrnia, el 17 de febrer de 1972. El seu pare era baterista de jazz i la seva mare cambrera. La seva carrera en el món de la música va començar a una edat bastant jove; cinc anys tenia quan va començar anar a cantar en hospitals per animar pacients. Quan tenia 10 anys, el seu pare va morir de càncer de pulmó.

La primera cançó que va gravar va ser “looking for love”. Després d'això, els seus amics van aconseguir que escoltés música punk dels grups d'aquell temps. Quant tenia 12 anys va escriure la seva primera cançó “Why do you Want him”.

Ha tocat en altres grups, però sobretot en el seu projecte paral·lel al grup “Pinhead Gunpowder”.

Billy Joe es va casar el 1994 en una cerimònia de 5 minuts amb Adrienne Nesser, amb qui encara discuteix quant se n'ha d'anar de gira.

Amb Nesser ha tingut dos fills: Joseph Marcicano i Jacob Danger Arsmtrong.

És el líder del grup i el compositor de totes les cançons.

Nom real: Michael Ryan Pritchard

Edat: 33 anys

Data de naixement: 04 de maig de 1972.

Instrument: El baix

Mike Dirnt, és el més calmat de tots tres i una mica menys boig que els altres.

Fill d'una addicta a la heroïna i d'un home blanc i de passar una infància terrible fins als 5 anys, va ésser traslladat en un internat. Allà una família el va adoptar però, quan ell tenia 7 anys, els seus pares adoptius es van divorciar i Dirnt va acabar vivint amb la seva mare adoptiva i la seva germana gran. Però això no va durar gaire ja que, al cap d'uns anys, va decidir marxar sol. Treballant, va trobar un dia, el bar on treballava la mare de Billy Joe i va alquilar una habitació de la casa de Billy on poder viure i dormir.

Mike es va casar amb la seva novia Anastàsia l'agost de 1996 i van tenir una nena anomenada Estelle-Desiree. Es van divorciar fa poc anys (1997).

Va créixer en les muntanyes amb el seu pare, veterà del Vietnam.

Va entrar a formar part de Green Day el 1991, quan Mike i Billy van entrar a formar part del segell LookOut Records.

En la seva trajectòria musical a Green Day, ha escrit dues cançons: “Dominated Love Slave” de l'àlbum amb el qual va debutar, Kerplunk i “All By Myself” de Dookie.

A l'edat de 12 anys, Tre va entrar a la banda de Lawrence Livermore, LookOut, i després de gravar un àlbum, va començar a tocar amb el grup per els clubs punk que hi havia a Berkeley.

Quan Kiffmeyer va deixar Green Day, ell s'hi va incorporar.

Tre es va casar amb la seva novia Lisea Lyons el març de 1995 i van tenir una nena anomenada Ramona i al cap d'uns anys es van divorciar.

Tre va tornar a contraure matrimoni el 4 de març de 2000 amb una nena anomenada Clàudia.

Va ser el primer bateria de Green Day. No se sap gaire cosa d'ell d'aquells dies, sols que va ser el primer bateria del grup. Va deixar The Sweet Children (com es deien abans) per dedicar-se a la seva carrera universitària i com a substitut d'ell va entrar Tre Cool. La seva presència està reflectida en el seu primer disc “1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours” però va tocar 4 cançons amb el grup en el seu segon disc “Kerplunk”. Alguns rumors dits per Tre Cool diuen que, en l'actualitat, Kiffmeyer és professor de bateria. I la pregunta és: I quin és el problema?

Estil musical i relació amb l'estètica i/o idees polítiques

Des del començament de la seva carrera, ja han tingut molt clar sempre el que els agrada i el que no. El que els agrada ho diuen i el que no, també.

No els importa dir les coses sense embuts i volen que la gent se n'adoni.

Un dels més clars exemples és el seu últim CD anomenat American Idiot.

Manifesten la seva disconformitat amb tots els afers polítics provocats per Bush com pot ser, la guerra d'Iraq, el transgiversament d'informació i el silenciament de les veus que estaven en desacord.

En política, Green Day forma part d'una campanya: “Vote for Change” liderada per Bruce Springsteing on tot una munió d'artistes com poden ser els U2, Manu Chao, Carlinhos Brown, REM, The Offspring, Sum 41, entre altres, manifesten amb les cançons, concerts, discs, etc, la seva disconformitat i com diu la campanya, voten per canviar. Amb tots aquests events intenten conscienciar a tots els estadounidencs de que canviïn el seu vot de Bush per algú amb més sentit comú.

En qüestió d'estètica, la vestimenta punk si està relacionada amb l'estil musical i amb les idees polítiques, ja que, posem per exemple, un cantant critica Estats Units o un altre país, però porta una roba i va d'una manera típica del capitalisme; seria un tan contradictori respecte les idees i l'estètica.

La conclusió és que sempre un cantant o un grup que canta sobre uns temes determinats, vesteix de la manera establerta o relacionada. Potser també és un tòpic marcat per la societat que “facis això i duguis allò per què és així” però, també és cert, que la societat punk és la que ho vol així.

Temàtica preferent de les seves cançons

La temàtica preferent de les cançons de Green Day, al igual que tot la música punk, és la de queixar-se per tot allò que estan disconformes.

La gran majoria de les seves cançons són crítiques a la societat, a lleis o al govern.

Un dels exemples pot ser la cançó “Fashion Victim” del CD “Warning”, que tracta sobre el creixement de nenes capitalistes que sols pensen en lluir modelets i que cada vegada s'amplia a tot arreu.

Un altre exemple, en l'àmbit polític, és la cançó que obre i dóna títol al seu últim treball “American Idiot” on tracta de manipuladors a tots els mitjans de comunicació, critica a Bush i insulta a Amèrica demostrant la seva posició.

Els seus temes també tracten sobre drogues.

Després de 3 anys de descans, Green Day va treure el seu tercer àlbum: Dookie. Aquest però, va ser el primer CD produït per una discogràfica de més reconeixement: Warner Reprise.

Va ser el seu tercer disc i el de major èxit de tots els que faria la banda. Amb aquest CD van saltar fora dels Estats Units i es van donar conéixer a tot el món i van potenciar la música punk que s'havia quedat un tan estancada després de la desaparició de The Clash, Ramones o d'altres.

El seu triomf comercial va seguir amb “Insomniac” que va tenir també una gran acceptació entre el públic punk i que juntament amb el seu anterior disc, Dookie, va ser recolzat per la constant emissió en les cadenes de televisió o en ràdios de tot el país.

Amb aquest CD van voler experimentar amb una cancó (Good Riddance), amb la guitarra acústica, buscan no estancar-se amb el punk-pop i experimentar.

L'últim CD de la banda és el de “American Idiot”, publicat a finals de l'any passat i on no es callen ni tan sols una paraulota per dir el que pensen dels Estats Units.

Nivell social dels components i relació amb l'estil musical

Green Day demostra amb cada cançó el seu parè i la seva idea sobre els temes que escriuen.

Les seves vides de petits no van ésser les d'el fill d'algú important o una gran quantitat de diners i saben el què és viure en barris baixos o mitjan-baixos. L'educació que van rebre, tampoc va ser gaire exemplar, i perquè no dir-ho, ells tampoc hi posaven gaire interès. No van acabar els estudis obligatoris i es passaven la gran major part de l'horari escolar, fumant Maria, cantant o fent entremaliadures. Vaja, uns estudiants exemplars.

En qüestió de relacionar el seu estil punk amb el seu nivell social, es pot dir que no té res a veure ja que, una persona faci música punk no ha de ser sinònim de bon o mal nivell social d'aquesta. Pot ésser una persona molt culta o tot el contrari, i manifestar-se amb la música que l'agrada i sentir-se millor fen-t'ho així. També és cert, que músiques com el punk, el rock o el rap, són les més utilitzades per reivindicar i dir veritats i que normalment l'usen cantants amb un cert passat estudiantil no gaire ben vist.

La conclusió, doncs, és que no s'ha de relacionar el nivell social dels cantants segons l'estil musical amb el qual s'expressen, tot i tenir, alguns punts amb comú, segons la història.

Opinió personal

Green Day per mi em suposa un canvi en la meva vida personal de pensament, de música, d'estètica... respecte com era abans.

Hem vaig “enganxar” a ells gràcies a la cançó “American Idiot” del seu últim àlbum que porta de nom el mateix títol.

La lletra explica la manipulació, l'aterrorització que va provocar Bush per ficar-se a tot el poble americà a la butxaca, perquè estiguessin a favor seu, a través dels medis de comunicació.

Un altre motiu, són les lletres en general. A part de queixar-se sobre el govern actual o el passat, lletres com potser de la cançó “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, “Holiday” o “She's a Rebel” són les que realment m'han impactat. La genialitat de Billy Joe per escriure i encertar en les lletres és brutal i perquè no reconéixe-ho, també m'he “enganxat” a Green Day, per el Billy que és molt guapo.

Personalment, les cançons de Green Day sempre m'inspiren força. Expliquen diferents situacions que fa que em senti identificada amb la lletra i fa que em senti millor.

Per últim, espero que en el concert del 27 de Juny que faran a Badalona, m'ho pugui passar súper bé i quedar-me afònica durant uns 5 dies ^.^
