BOB MARLEY

Robert Nesta Marley, Va néixer el 6 de febrer de 1945, en Nine Mile, una petita localitat al nord de Jamaica, no podia imaginar que arribaria a convertir-se en un dels mites musicals d'aquest segle. Cedella Booker, una dona africana en Jamaica, de 18 anys i de Norval Marley, un capità de l'exèrcit britànic, que es va desentendre del seu fill. A finals dels anys cinquanta, Robert es va traslladar amb la seva mare a Kingston, la capital. Era la ciutat on els habitants de les zones rurals anaven per millorar la seva situació econòmica. Com la majoria de les famílies rurals, el seu destí va ser els barris pobres i miserables. Gran influència va ser en la vida de Bob Marley va ser la religió Rastafarí, mescla de profecies bíbliques, filosofia naturista i nacionalisme negre.

El 1930 Ras Tafari Makkonen va ser coronat emperador de Etiopía, passant a dir-se Hailè Selassiè. Segons una vella profecia, aquest rei “libertaríMa” a la raça negra del domini blanc.

Molts jamaicans, creients en la profecia, el van elegir com a representant de la seva nova religió. Va ser en aquest ambient quan Robert va conèixer a Neville O'Riley Livingstone ( Bunny ) i a Peter McIntosh. Junts van començar a tocar, influenciats per la música de Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Brook Benton o Curtis Mayfield. El 1963 formen un grup, “Wailing Wailers”, llançant un primer single que arribaria al primer lloc a les llistes jamaicanas. Marley es va convertir en un dels primers a escriure cançons sobre els joves delinqüents del ghetto de Kigston. El 1966, Bob Marley es va casar amb Rita Anderson, i va marxar a viure amb la seva mare uns mesos. Aquesta estava vivint als Estats Units, amb el seu nou home. Quan va tornar a la illa, la creença en la religió Rastafarí havia crescut, reflectint-se en les seves cançons. Amb els seus amics Bunny y Peter, creant un nou grup, “The Wailers”.

Degut a la “espiritualitat” que s'expressava en les seves cançons, van trobar problemes per trobar representants, el que va restar gran part de l'èxit que esperaven. Als principis dels anys setanta, es van aliar amb Lee Perry, un productor que revoluciona el seu treball, donant com a resultat algunes de les seves millors obres, com “Soul Rebel”, “Small Axe”, “400 Years”, etc. El 1972, el grup va fer el seu primer àlbum, “Catch a Fire”, que va tenir un gran èxit, el que va portar a la casa discogràfica a realitzar una gira per Anglaterra i Estats Units.

El 1973 va sortir a la llum el seu nou disc, “Burnin”, Amb noves versions dels seus vells temes. El 1975 Bunny i Peter van deixar el grup per dedicar-se a una carrera en solitari. Els van substituir la dona de Bob, Marcia Griffiths i Judy Mowatt.

El grup va passar a dir-se “Bob Marley y The Wailers”. El 1976 es va publicar “Rastaman Vibrations”, ficant-se a les llistes d'èxits i sent considerat com el més clar exponent de les creences de Bob. El 5 de desembre de 1976, Bob es disposava a fer un concert a Jamaica, com a reivindicació de la pau i els drets dels ciutadans de la seva pàtria. Però uns desconeguts el van atacar abans del concert, encara que sense ferir-lo. Després d'aquest atemptat, Bob Marley abandona Jamaica i es va traslladar a Florida, multiplicant les seves gires per USA, Europa i Àfrica. L'any següent es va editar el seu àlbum “Exodus”, que es va convertir en superventas a Anglaterra. El 1978, van publica “Kaya”, un nou èxit amb cancons d'amor i de homenatges a la marihuana. Després de la publicació del disc “Babylon By Bus”, fruit d'una gira per Europa i Amèrica, Bob va visitar Àfrica, fet que el va inspirar un nou àlbum, “Survival”, homenatge a la pàtria africana.

El 1980 va publicar “Uprising”, gràcies el seu èxit fou fabulós, fent fer una nova gira europea que va bati tots els recursos de assistència. Al finalitzar la gira europea, Bob va caure greument malalt de càncer, causat per una ferida que s'havia fet uns anys abans. L'11 de maig de 1981 Bob Marley va morir en un hospital de Miami als 36 anys. El seu cos va ser traslladat a la seva ciutat natal, Nine Mile, a on descansa en un museu. Al seu funeral acudiren el primer ministre i altres personalitats del seu país.
