INTRODUCTION

With the present work I try to make a study of the publicity of the company of mobile telephony Ericsson. The mobile telephony has even had a very big development in Europe more than in The United States, since in Europe a single frequency was unified to emit while in The United States the different frequencies are not compatible and some companies are not compatible with others. The great bet of the European Community for the mobile telephony makes that every time a bigger number of people has got a mobile telephone, and not only for a commercial use, but for a private use or leisure. I have chosen the company Ericsson, of Swedish origin, because it has had a great development in the entire world and especially in Spain where it has been chosen by Retevisión, company which got the third license of mobile telephony, to develop all their equipment of mobile telephony. Therefore I will try to show the social groups to which the advertisements are directed; advertisements for businessmen, for young people. I will also study their typography and their influence in the meaning of the advertisement, the differences that can be found among the advertisements that appear in English and in Spanish. Neither it is less important a study of the image, we will see the way it changes along the years as the mobile telephony evolves and becomes more popular.

The advertisements have been obtained from several sources, on the one hand the magazine `The Economist ', from which I have taken out the advertisements in English and of the `Suplemento ' of `La Voz de Galicia and of `El País Semanal ' of the newspaper `El País ' from which I have taken out the advertisements in Spanish.

The bibliography handled is based on the Spanish publicity but you can use it to be applied to the publicity in English speech, because after all, everything is publicity and it is used equally in all the countries, although it can have differences for linguistic or social reasons, depending on the cultural tradition of each country.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ADVERTISEMENTS

In the first place we will work with the advertisements published in English language. These advertisements are printed in white and black .It contrasts the clothes that the man that is hung of the lamp by means of a trapeze in the advertisement number 1. In number 2 he is jumping from a bridge as practising a risky sport. The centre of the advertisements is the white colour that is still marked more intensely with the folio that he takes in his hand and that he is giving it to a co-worker. On the contrary, the mobile telephone passes to a second plane: reduced dimensions, black colour, and with this, what the advertiser gets to demonstrate is that many things can be made with a mobile telephone in the hand; the main objective of the advertisement.

With reference to the geometric forms, the predominant one is the rectangular and square shape in the advertisement 1, contrasting with the round shape. There are four globes that circulate the lamp while in the advertisement 2 the rounded forms prevail; the arches in a lateral of the stay. The square and rectangular forms are in the windows of the bottom, in the tables and the telephones that there are on them. So we can say that in the advertisement 1 dominates the classicism in modern geometric ways, while in the advertisement 2 what prevails is the classic architectural classicism. In both advertisements the only thing that remains is the mobile telephone Ericsson whose rectangular form combines perfectly with both atmospheres.

The style of the advertisements 3, 4, 5, 6 changes completely; the advertisement only occupies half of a magazine leaf, they are advertisements in colour, in the number 3 the brown colour dominates while in the 4 the predominant colour is green. They are telephones that can be mimicked with people. They are not black, they agree with the rhythm of each one and they can vary their colour depending on the clothes that are taken. The advertisements of the pages five and six occupy half of the page and two images different from the same telephone are appreciated. It is a model for executives and older people, not for young people. We have this indication because this telephone is held on a card that, by the way, it is not Spanish, but a French card and has the number nine of rhombuses and the ten of hearts, the numbers nine and ten are the highest valuations that can be given to this telephone. It is a distinguished telephone, of small size, and light weight. In the ad 6 the telephone is supported on reading glasses. Those glasses are black and they are a little bigger than the mobile telephone. It is also a distinction symbol when the telephone is accompanied of some glasses that could belong to a businessman or an intellectual.

If we compare advertisements 5 and 6 with the numbers 1 and 2 we see that there is a similarity. In the 5 the rectangular forms prevail: the telephone and the cards, while in the 6 the roundness of the glasses is contrasted with the rectangular form of its mount and the rectangular form of the telephone.

THE TEXT

The whole structure of the texts of the advertisements is divided in three parts that agree with the principles of the rhetoric: First there is an introduction with a word which we call slogan, it continues with the argument and it concludes with a summary of the main idea of the advertisement ; The slogans of the advertisements 1 and 2 is `Enjoy ' this it is the first word that appears, they want to give us the impression that one can enjoy using a mobile telephone although he is working. The text conclusion of these announcements is `The new Ericsson GH688. Made for business. Good for life. '

Another aspect to highlight is the conative function of the advertising message. From the first moment an imperative function is used in English Enjoy and in the Spanish advertisements we can find Exprésate while in the Spanish advertisements numbers 5 and 6 We can read: Olvida los grandes móviles, olvida el pasado.

In the advertisements 3, 4, 5 and 6 we find a symbol that says Ericsson, original, accessories. We are facing words of English origin in an advertisement in Spanish, with this the publicist intends to give more relevance to the advertisement. It will be the reader the only one that is in charge of translating it and not the advertising company.

TYPOGRAPHY

The advertisements of Ericsson don't present a special difficulty from the typographic point of view. Their letters are of the type `New Times Roman ', a quite common letter and that comes predetermined in the word processors. On the other hand, the size of the letter is quite small, with a size 10, used in the descriptive texts, and a lightly bigger size, 12, for the introduction and the summary. González Martín says that the different letter types can express different expressive elements, what Ericsson demonstrates is a desire to transmit only what the advertisement wants to sell, without getting the attention of the consumer in a more aggressive way.

THE SLOGANS AND THE GROUPS THEY ARE DIRECTED TO.

There are two groups to those that go directed the advertisements, one is the businessmen and others are the young people. The slogans used are completely different. In one, directed to the businessman, it is Enjoy, while in that for young people it is Exprésate. It is something contradictory to tell a businessman to enjoy his work, while a young man is told to express himself using and changing the aspect of a mobile telephone whose primordial purpose is the business before the leisure. Also the use of the anglicisms in the advertisements in Spanish is a symbol that people to which the advertisement is directed is young with a good knowledge of English. In summary they are telephones for learned people.

CONCLUSION

One can say that the text interaction with images makes that all the elements make sense inside all. The contrasts among the images in black and white, and those in colour, the circular and square forms, the symbolism of the numbers, the anglicisms, and the slogans make that the image of the users of Ericsson is not the same one that those of Nokia or Motorola or Alcatel. A form of being and working is transmitted with all the means that I have described. Ericsson sells us intelligence, class, amusement, and style opposed to its competitors. The advertisers has filled an empty element, a sign, a mobile telephone, with meaning and they have made the miracle of the publicity.

The four globes of the lamp make the structure of a square if we draw a line from one to the other, with this the square shape is still kept.

They are arches that imitate the romanic style, but they are higher and rounded.
